Internet Gambling: US Businesses Still Taking A Piece of the Pie

Internet Gambling: US Businesses Still Taking A Piece of the Pie

May 19, 2007

The news that Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO), the California based internet service company, has opened an online poker room which would target primarily U.K. residents seemed to be a surprise to many people. And it should not. Not just because gambling is by far the most lucrative business in the world after baby food manufacturing, but it's because this illustrates the business practice of most US companies.

Online Gambling: Richest Man In the World Sounds Off On Gambling

May 19, 2007

After spending last week in Mississippi for the Southern Gaming Summit, I've finally gotten a chance to catch up on the Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) Annual Shareholder meeting. I came across the above quote from the May 5 Q&A session. The quote is part of Berkshire CEO Warren Buffett's response to a question regarding Buffett's thoughts on the future of the gambling industry. Buffett's partner Charlie Munger then followed up by labeling gambling a "dirty business."

Since 1998, Pinnacle Sports has been doing online business with US citizens who enjoy gambling, but when American gamblers signed onto their accounts this morning, they were informed they could no longer place bets with this sports book located in Curacao.

Pinnacle's "main man" gave EOG an exclusive interview this morning and here is some of what he had to say:

After almost thirty hands of heads-up play, The WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open came to a close as John Hennigan finally bested the field and sent Chuck Kelley home in second place. With the nickname, "Johnny World", due to his propensity to bet on anything and everything, it came down to an easy bet on a sure thing river card after a misstep by Kelley.

PokerTek leads a growing market of electronic poker games

PokerTek leads a growing market of electronic poker games

December 1, 2006

Electronic multi-player table games (EMTs) are starting to gain traction in the casino industry. Electronic poker, blackjack and roulette tables littered nearly every aisle of the 2006 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas earlier this month. And electronic poker tables can already be found in several casinos.

PokerTek CEO Lou White, which produces the PokerPro electronic poker table, believes that the timeline for implementation of these EMTs in casinos will be directly related to the relationship between the player and the dealer in the game.

Poker Lobby & AGA groups aim to end Online Gambling Bill

November 17, 2006

The Poker Players Alliance and executives for the American Gaming Association (AGA) say they are hopeful that the recent political changes in the U.S. Congress will help them overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA). You may recall how the UIGEA was appended onto to the sure-to-be-passed Safe Port Bill when most Senators had already cast their votes and left, in the final hours before the Republican-controlled Congress adjourned for mid-term elections.

Limit Hold Em - Realized vs Potential Value

Limit Hold Em - Realized vs Potential Value

October 20, 2006

Before the river card falls you give a lot of consideration to the possibilities for you and your opponents based on an unseen card and the chance of that card to improve your chances. Once the river card is dealt, it is what it is. After the river card is dealt your hand only has realized value.

Poker - Home Poker Games

Poker - Home Poker Games

August 28, 2006

On the dusty plains of Texas, poker wasn't like it is today. You played mostly private games and you didn't have a large selection of tables to choose from. Most games were attached to bars or pool halls. Some were in private homes. Often you settled disputes among yourselves.

I realize that some players seldom see poker competition beyond their homes. That's why I'm revisiting a chapter from a book I wrote almost 25 years ago. It's about some of the stickier situations regarding home poker.

POKER: The Right Time To Raise
051102-poker-position
by Doyle Brunson [10.28.06]

I was only 18. I was fascinated by poker and took it seriously. At that age, some poker concepts had already jelled in my mind and some hadn't.This story shows a little of each. It's about a businessman named Ken who, every week, came to our game in Sweetwater, Texas. He always lost, and it wasn't because he was unlucky. He just flat out always got drunk and played poorly. Today was no exception. He had gotten up from the table numerous times to walk to the bar across the room.

Are you a loser?

For most people here the answer is “HELL YES”. But now – pay attention – this could make you some money. Scarlett has graciously agreed to give Shrink $1,000 to donate for this contest.

Every year there are Suicide/Elimination/Last Man Standing pools where you have to pick a winner every week and as long as you do you advance.

This one is along the same lines – sort of

Instead of picking a team to WIN every week – in this contest you have to pick a team to LOSE every week. Think that sounds easy? Think again! It’s really easy to pick against the 49ers and other dreg teams every week but in this contest you can only pick the 49ers ONE week – then you are done with them for the season. At some point in time you will need to pick teams like the Colts, Pats or Steelers to LOSE and that is where the “fun” begins

THERE IS NO NEED to “pre-register” or say “I’m in” ahead of time. All you need to do is have your first pick in by the deadline (see below for that) and you are “IN”.

THERE IS ONLY ONE REQUIREMENT FOR THIS CONTEST: You MUST have at least 150 posts to enter. Your first post in the contest thread can be post #150 but if it is even #149 you will be “kicked out” of the contest. You have more than enough time to get to #150 so this isn’t being unreasonable. This contest is open to ANYONE here as long as they have at least 150 posts.

What’s in it for you?

Payoff:

1st Place: $667
2nd Place: $222
3rd Place: $111

RULES

**Pick a team to LOSE each week. As long as the team LOSES – you advance. If they WIN – you are eliminated. If your team TIES – that will be considered the SAME as a loss since they did not win – and you will advance. On the off chance the game you pick is cancelled or does not get completed (Like last year with the Dolphins and the hurricane situations) – you are NOT eliminated – maybe. If the game is called off the day before the game ONLY THEN will you be allowed to pick another game to take its place. If the game gets called off the DAY of the game you will then have to pick Two (2) games the next week (with one pick designated for “last week” and one for “this week” if the pick will make a difference in a prize payoff).. Once we get to Ten (10) people left you will have to submit Two (2) games per week – just in case one never gets completed – stating which is your “main” pick and which is the “back-up” pick.

**As for what constitutes an “official game” we will use the widely followed rule of 55 game time minutes makes an official game.

**You can ONLY pick each team ONCE for the entire 2006 season. If you repeat a pick and take a team for the SECOND time this season you are eliminated – even if your team loses (and we are keeping track of picks)

**Picks are due ONE HOUR before the posted kickoff time at NFL.com for games starting on a day OTHER than Sunday & Noon (Eastern Time) Sunday for games starting on Sunday or Monday. For example – the opening game of the NFL season is a Thursday 8:30P kickoff between Miami and Pittsburgh. If you want to pick this game your pick MUST be in by 7:30 (EDT).

**Think about your pick and make sure it is the pick you want because there is NO EDITING OF PICKS! Once you post a pick – it is your pick. If you edit the pick YOU WILL BE ELIMINATED! If you make a pick and then decide to change your mind – NOPE! If you submit a pick and, say, it is Post #3 of the thread, then you decide to change your mind and in post #6 you change your mind and say you want the 2nd pick to be the pick you want to stick – NOPE! YOUR FIRST PICK IS YOUR ONLY PICK! You can submit 300 picks after that but ONLY YOUR FIRST PICK COUNTS!

**Picks for a game submitted LESS than one hour before the deadline will NOT be accepted and you will be eliminated from this contest. A post at Noon Sunday for a game played that day (OR Monday) is OK. A post at 12:01P is NOT and a 12:01P post will see that contestant eliminated. NO EXCEPTIONS!

**IF there are problems here at the site and it is down for an extended period of time and thus people aren’t allowed to make picks the week will be considered “null and void”. NO PICKS will be graded and everyone will move on to the next week – any picks made will be “ignored” – regardless of outcome.

**Once we get down to 10 (or less) players remaining they will have the option of posting their pick here on this site – or e-mailing them to someone so their pick can be kept private until after the deadline. You still have the same one hour deadline so please keep this in mind and please make sure to send a copy of your pick to yourself – just in case

**Any ties for the money will result in the payoff being split. If 2 people tie for 1st – both will get $444. A 3-way tie for 3rd gets everyone $37…you get the point. If more than 1 person goes the entire season w/o making a bad pick – all remaining entrants will split the prize money for their spot(s) – this is NOT going to carry over to the Playoffs

**Determining when players are eliminated will be done by “week” – not “day”. For example – if there are 3 players left and they pick a Thursday, Sunday and Monday game – and all 3 make unsuccessful picks – they will all be considered to have gone out at the same time. The day the game is played is irrelevant – it is the Week that will be used as the tie-breaker

**One last thing: Once the FIRST Sunday deadline passes this contest is CLOSED to all new entrants. Please don’t post after the Week 1 deadline something like, “Sorry I missed making the first pick can I make 2 next week to make up for it” for the answer will be “NO”! Once this “race” has started no new “runners” can enter. You all have been given almost 1 month to enter – if that isn’t enough lead time I don’t know what is!
